National
Long-term Survivors Group Weekend

at Glenfall Hall

There were fewer people than in April, perhaps because of holidays, or may be the thought of the Annual General Meeting was off putting. Well deserved praise and thanks was given to the outgoing Chairman and Treasurer who had seen the group through the crisis of almost folding and are leaving office with the satisfaction of knowing that the NLTSG is in a sounder and healthier financial state than when they were elected. As always the greatest joy of the weekends is meeting up with familiar faces and getting to know new people. The house has extensive grounds and adjoining open countryside, so there are plenty of quiet spots to sit and read or just lie and enjoy the warm peace and tranquility. Glenfall Hall is a haven of serenity, but bathed in glorious sunlight with the flowers in full bloom, it transforms into a fragrant heaven.

There is a feeling of a family, a sense of being amongst friends. Outside of sessions, therapists and facilitators alike, made amiable, interesting and stimulating company. The two of the aroma therapists brought with them a small but up-to-date collection of books on health related issues all relevant to people living with HIV. I bought a couple on the spot. The details of books that seemed most interesting have been passed on to Neil to be ordered for the resource library. Watch out for their arrival!

Every time I go on a National Long Term Survivors Group weekend at Glenfall Hall, I hate to leave. It is a precious episode that one doesn’t want to end. At least, when the closing circle is broken and people have said their good byes, the pain of departure is eased by knowing that you go away with your batteries recharged and with renewed vigour to cope with whatever lies ahead.

It is surprising that the group continues to exist given that it receives no core funding from any statutory organisation nor any support from the drug companies. The vast majority of participants are benefiting from antiviral drugs. The group is a living testament to the effectiveness of HAART, Perhaps those drug companies who publicly express a policy of assisting self help initiatives might wish to be associated with a group which has, against all the odds managed to survive.
