Hi, there!
My name is Nigel Burbidge and I have taken over as HIV/Sexual Health Promotion Manager for Staffordshire Buddies in December 2000. My role is to manage the Mesmen Project and to develop new services in South Staffordshire. I am delighted to be here and look forward to working with such a friendly, lively and dedicated team of people.

Briefly, my background in sexual health promotion with gay and bisexual men started in 1987 when I used to volunteer for Leicester Lesbian and Gayline. I helped develop the Men’s Sexual Health Project, before moving to Bristol in 1992. I worked for the Terrence Higgins Trust West as one of the Gay Men’s Health Promotion Co-ordinators. In my time, there my role changed considerably with the development of the Community HIV/AIDS Prevention Strategy (CHAPS). CHAPS is funded by the Department of Health and delivers national campaigns through the gay press, and by funding local agencies to support these initiative with local work. My part in CHAPS was to be part of a team that developed the campaigns and I was part of the committee that re-wrote the second edition of the CHAPS strategy “Making it Count”. Most gay and bisexual health promotion projects in England utilised the strategy document in their prevention work.

Building on the excellent work of the Mesmen Project has been a priority for me and we already have had a development day focusing on new work and ideas that you will see in the future. One of the new areas of work will be targeting young lesbians, gay men and bisexual people. We will be undertaking research this year looking at the opportunities to form a youth group for South Staffordshire. If you are interested in this project or can help, please contact me for further information. I am looking forward to meeting you if you use any of our services or are a partner agency that we work with.
